Before and After Bathroom Upgrade

Browse through “before and after” pictures of some of our past work in bathrooms. TD Renovations is based in Elk Park, North Carolina, but we’ll travel as far as Johnson City, Tennessee for a bathroom renovation project. Some bathroom remodeling work is mostly aesthetic, since fashions change over time, but there are lots of practical reasons to update your bathroom.

Remodeling as an Investment

Both kitchen and bathroom remodels are popular ways to increase the value of your property. For us at TD Renovations, many of our clients are updating a bathroom that’s just a little awkward or outdated. Maybe the tiles looked trendy in 1980 or the tub has been resurfaced too many times. Some bathroom fixtures were practical or economical back when they were originally installed, but now you’re ready for something better.

Before Old Tub Surround Replacement After Custom Tile Shower Installed

It’s not just about resale value. If you’ve always disliked that old tub or fiberglass insert, this is your chance to build something you actually like walking into every day. Upgrading the shower with custom tile makes a world of difference. Let’s open up that cramped layout for a more spacious design. We can quickly replace and upgrade old hardware and fixtures.

Practical Bathroom Changes for Daily Life

Some remodeling choices aren’t for resale — they’re for your sanity. Bathrooms are some of the most-used rooms in a home. Whether you’re getting ready in the morning, unwinding at the end of the day, or styling your hair to go back out in the evening, a bathroom can set the tone for whatever’s next. Small frustrations add up quickly, especially when two people are trying to get ready in the same space.

  • Double your single bathroom vanity to avoid crowding
  • Expand the shower for more elbow room
  • Add a second or rainfall shower head for a more spa-like shower
  • Reduce the clutter with recessed niches and shelves
  • Organize the extra stuff with drawers and cabinets

Your bathroom may not be the first place you take guests on a tour of your home, but it’s a place you spend time every day. Big bathroom upgrades can boost the resale value of your home, but practical changes can add more storage and value immediately.

Bathroom Changes for Aging in Place & Accessibility

“Aging in place” is a remodeling priority for many people we help at TD Renovations. Practical renovation choices improve accessibility in key areas like the bathroom. Narrow doorways, slippery surfaces, high tub walls, and tight layouts are annoying enough today, but just imagine navigating your current bathroom with a walker or wheelchair.

Practical, pro-active bathroom upgrades for “aging in place” may help you spend more years in your own home:

Before Vintage Tub Replacement After Modern Tile Shower Installation
  • Walk-in showers with low (or zero) thresholds
  • Professionally installed grab bars and handrails
  • Built-in benches or corner seats
  • Wider entries for improved accessibility
  • Non-slip tile selections
  • Handheld shower wands for easier cleaning

Planning for accessibility doesn’t have to mean looking like a nursing home. Ask Tom and Denise for suggestions that are both practical and safe without looking institutional.

Garden Tub Removal

If you love your garden tub, that’s great! For many home builders and remodelers, garden tubs are like the waterbed of the bathroom. They seem like a great idea at first (a jacuzzi spa inside your own home, right?). Then, in practice, they take up a ton of space, use up to double the water of a regular bathtub, and the “features” gradually stop working over time. Instead of jets of warm water, you might just get circulating air that cools off your water. All kinds of stuff accumulates when the jets haven’t been cleaned. Big corner tubs can negatively impact resale value, especially if they’ve been neglected.

Some people love their fancy tubs, and they use them regularly, and we’re happy for them. Actually, we invested in an outdoor hot tub for use in between remodeling jobs. As a general style trend, however, the big bathroom tubs have fallen out of fashion, and many homebuyers dislike what they consider a “Vegas honeymoon” aesthetic. One of our clients had us replace their garden tub with a freestanding tub, and another homeowner just preferred to keep the space empty.

If the garden tub is the only bathtub in your home, and you’re concerned about resale value, then we’d usually recommend replacing it with a more practical tub or tub/shower combination. Some people prefer soaking in a tub instead of standing in a shower, and they’re practical for washing kids and pets.
